Government and military respiratory protection programs in the United States are governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, which mandates annual fit testing for all personnel required to wear tight-fitting respirators. Government entities operating under federal OSHA jurisdiction must meet these requirements, while state and local agencies may be subject to state-plan OSHA programs that are at least as stringent as the federal standard.
